Visions of the Future - AI's Impact
Professionally, I focus on creating social benefit startups. In my Saturday morning emails I share what I’m learning and thinking. Topics range from better living and parenting to business and philosophy.
Public discussion of the impact of technology including artificial intelligence is increasing. What’s your vision of the future?
Harness the new technology as we did electricity as Kevin Kelly or Avi Goldfarb suggest.
Provide a Universal Basic Income as a response to technological unemployment ala The War on Normal People or Lights in the Tunnel.
Share in Fully Automated Luxury Communism: Universal Basic Services provided by local economies powered by space mining, renewable energy and genetic engineering.
Accept that individual humans no longer are the locus of decision making or perhaps even moral or political value. Embrace dataism over humanism ala Homo Deus.
Merge human intelligence with machine intelligence to transcend human biology ala The Singularity is Near.
Move to North America to survive the End of the World is the Beginning. Expect de-population, de-globalization, a smaller economy, mass starvation, increased armed conflict and a stalled green revolution.
Relax in your coming Keynesian 15-hour work week.
Retreat into cyberspace ala Ready Player One or William Gibson.
Make War against robots ala the Terminator
Languish in imprisonment and delusion ala the Matrix
Escape via a negative-carbon backed crypto currency and orbital solar power to jump start a new economy in space ala Critical Mass.
Or invent explanations and solutions to our problems as we are capable of solving any problem when not prevented by laws of physics. Follow David Deutsch and don’t worry about our latest computer tools as they lack true problem solving capabilities or ability to be disobedient.
Or something else? What’s a thoughtful take on the future that is missing from this list? I would love to hear your thoughts.
Until next week,
Miles
