Happy Saturday! Here are your 5 things from the mind of Miles for this week.
LalTal Learning App. I’ve so enjoyed playing with the LalTal learning app. It includes retrieval, explaining, and connecting concepts. At least three of the 10 essential strategies for deeper learning. And it has a section for synbio which is perfect for my current learning pursuits.
Esther Perel. Is it rubbernecking or is it training your empathy to listen to other couples’ therapy sessions? Can you learn much from a heavily edited version of someone else’s therapy session? I believe you can learn and am a big fan of Esther Perel’s podcast Where Should We Begin (and also her books).
The Index. I stumbled across the index recently. A public embrace of some of the concepts in building a second brain. (But on Google Docs instead of Notion, Roam or IdeaFlow.) If you’ve built a second brain, I’d love to hear about it. I do a lot of note taking mainly in Google Docs but nothing to this extent.
Extra Life. Over the last century and a half, in much of the world, we have added 20,000 days to our expected life span. Yes, Covid-19 or deaths-of-despair are serious issues. The fact remains that we’ve gained many years of life. I had hired a researcher to help me untangle the causes and figure out the most important ones. Problem solved with this new book. Steven Johnson’s Extra Life masterfully tells the story of how this wonder came about. More public health and nutrition and less medicine than you might assume. He points out it takes a network of people to bring a new idea to scale including a promoter/activist. What life saving changes are we not adopting today? How would we systematically find those?
Recent Episodes. It’s not too late to catch up on recent Startups for Good podcasts. I’m continuing to hone my interview skills and really enjoying the guests:
Aaron Feuer, Co-Founder and CEO of Panorama Education
Christie Lagally, Founder & CEO of Rebellyous Foods
Ross Burhdorf, CEO of ZenBusiness
Ade Adesanya, Co-founder & President of Moving Analytics Inc.
Until next week,
Miles
