Happy Saturday! Here is your weekly dose of the world of Miles’ curiosity, learning, techno-optimism, business thoughts, and ways to be a better human.
Founders Podcast. Folks, you’ve been holding out on me! A key reason that I started this newsletter is to keep learning. I like to share what I’m seeing that is interesting and I hope that you will share similar stuff with me. I want you to feel comfortable emailing me if you see something you think I’d like. For example, a loyal reader (ok, it was my brother) sent me this: Founders a podcast that focuses on books (a clue here that I might like it!) that are biographies of founders (another clue it is about entrepreneurship!). And it connects the learnings from one life story to another to find common patterns. Think Acquired meets Hardcore History.
More AI Demos. Startup Adept AI proposes a definition of artificial general intelligence (AGI): system that can do anything a human can do in front of a computer. Maybe this is circular or self-serving but does make some sense. They appear to be getting closer. Check out the demos of asking the computer to do database research or make spreadsheets for you.
Key Questions. While I never took the Building a Second Brain course, I did pick up the book recently. It inspired me to list out the key questions that I’m seeking to learn in life. These are the questions I have read and thought about for many years. Here is a sample of my current list. What is on your list?
Entrepreneurship: how do I build valuable, innovative organizations I can be proud of?
Husband: how can I be a better husband?
Fatherhood: How do I act as a father to create strong relationships and help our children fulfill their potential?
Investment: How do I pilot our personal investment portfolio?
Health: How do I stay healthy as I age?
Morality: How do I behave? What do I value?
Duties I Owe: What duties do I owe to other people and animals?
Effective Giving: How do I give time and money most effectively?
Mortality: How do I face (and embrace?) mortality? How do I prepare for death while living fully today?
Decisions: How can I make better decisions?
Truth: How do I believe true things?
Presence? How do I more often live in the present moment?
Support Structure: How do I create and maintain an effective support structure around me to allow me to achieve in theses other areas?
Until next week,
Miles
P.S. I shared a chart showing the rise in obesity in Americans. A reader pointed me to criticism of the BMI including the fact that the definition of obesity was apparently changed in the 90s(?). What if we focused on more direct health measures like resting heart rate, grip strength or blood sugar rather than a stigmatized overview number like weight?
