Professionally, I focus on creating social benefit startups. In my Saturday morning emails I share what I’m learning and thinking. Topics range from better living and parenting to business and philosophy.
Drugs. What should we do about drugs? Drug overdoses deaths continue to rise past 100,000 a year. If people in the US uses 5 metric tons of fentanyl per year, how can we ever keep that out? Marijuana is legal in many places. Psychedelics seem to be next in line. How far should we go? Legalize pretty much all drugs as proposed in Chasing the Scream? Hari points to countries like Portugal where legalization of heroin was reportedly successful. And he suggests the underlying issue is physiological trauma. If one addresses the trauma, then desire for drugs goes down. Or should we reduce drug punishment and instead confiscate any illegal drugs without arrest. What is the role of medical assisted treatment like and vaccines? (If we were starting over, would we make alcohol the most available and socially acceptable drug?)
Front Row Dads. I’m a fan of the podcast from Front Row Dads. Many episodes provide me with inspiration. For example, they recently featured Buy Back Your Time from Dan Martell. And featured the 10 Disciplines from the creator of EOS. These are not as foundational as Getting Things Done or 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership but are definitely worth the time.
Hobby List. I started keeping a list of hobbies. They include seeking answers to my key questions, reading (including listening to books), hosting events and “starting shit”. (Plus I guess this newsletter?) I also started keeping a list of aspirational hobbies. It is a list of what I imagine doing more of some day. More hiking, dancing, attending dance performances, competitive forecasting, cooking, making, street epistemology, pottery, photography, litter cleanup and gardening. For now, I’m settling for encouraging other people to do my aspirational hobbies and dabbling in them. What are your hobbies?
Until next week,
Miles
